Every Chinese will indeed be surprised at this wat so-called "FORTUNE COOKIE" while going to the Chinese restaurants in the U.S.; because it's never seen in Taiwan or China. It's really a fresh "Chinese" experience that i'll never forget in America...:)
The fortune cookie is a dumpling-like crisp cookie w/ a piece of paper hidden inside. The paper usually delivers messages like words of wisdom or prophecy. Sometimes it would include a list of lottery numbers, like the pic above...

The idea of hiding a message in the cookie somehow makes me think of mooncakes...:p
Fortune cookies are generally served in Chinese restaurants here after a meal and come w/ your bill. BUT!!! It's totally a U.S. invention, basically from CA (SF or LA). Some Asian immigrants initiated the fortune cookie busine...:)
Americans also like to make fun of the cookie a lot. For example, im addicted to Google Personalized Page recently that I find this funny tool for my perosnalized page. A different message will show up while i open google daily. :p

And the following is a flickr toy that you can see random pics by related to your specified tag.
